An adult with long-standing diabetes reports gradual blurring of central vision over weeks to months, which may fluctuate. Glycaemic control has often been suboptimal. It can occur at any stage of retinopathy, including mild disease.

Examination
Reduced acuity with retinal thickening at the macula. Microaneurysms, dot and blot haemorrhages and hard exudates at the posterior pole.
